Productive Rooftop Garden Design

The brief

Site: A Hackney Wick warehouse making the transformation from an abandoned factory to a community hub.

Requirements:

The brief has evolved along with the leaseholder’s vision. The key constants were that this space must support circularity on-site, making use of food waste, and in turn, supplying food for the site’s culinary operations.

  • Food growing beds, wormeries, hot composters and spaces for pollinators were integral to the designs.

  • A safe social space fit for events and local residents’ recreation.

Circular design

Food growing beds, wormeries, hot composters and spaces for pollinators were integral to the designs.

An immersive space

Visitors can walk among wildflowers, edible perennials and shrubs while soaking in the views of London beyond the tall balustrades. A dedicated food growing space serves the restaurant.

Sustainable living

The outhouses home a series of large wormeries and hot bins. Community events can take place under cover. Signage and events help the visitors to engage with the space and take ideas home.
