Community Rooftop Design
Greening our Cities
The Brief
Designs for a series of green roofs on a council-owned property in line with Green Infrastructure Principles.
The building is being renovated for community use, and the space needs to provide visitors with a safe and social space, whilst supporting nature.
Design Response
Adapted for climate change - absorbing water to reduce flooding, providing summer cooling and accommodating wildlife. Planted areas lock-up carbon.
Healthy - helping our physical and mental health by absorbing pollution, providing clean air, potentially food and space to socialise, learn new skills and have contact with nature.
Biodiverse - supporting a wide variety of native species providing shelter and food and strengthening
existing green corridors.
Smart and Sustainable - techniques and technologies are low maintenance and designed with resource reduction in mind.
Multifunctional - making use of available resources with maximum impact.
Features include
Easily accessible green wall which can be reached from ground level
Space to socialise with fold-away furniture
Food growing and a ‘tea garden’ in raised beds
Biodiverse green roof with open water, log piles and wildflowers
The project was built by Bridgman & Bridgman with support from locals enrolled on their green roof training scheme, including gardeners, a firefighter, grounds people, ecologists, estate managers and carpenters.
Photos of the completed project to come shortly.
